Introducing Patient Portal
Table of Contents
The PatientPay Patient Portal is a responsive web application that allows patients to manage and pay their bills from any mobile device or their desktop.
How Does PatientPay Work?
PatientPay works with health care providers to integrate with their EHR or system of record and automatically receive electronic statements reflecting the patient's financial responsibility for their medical bills. Each statement contains a summary of services performed, any payments or adjustments made thus far, the balance due, and guarantor/patient demographics. PatientPay ingests this information and creates an easy-to-understand medical bill to present to the guarantor. PatientPay uses a patient matching algorithm to prevent creating the same patient multiple times and giving them a single portal to access all bills from multiple providers. This improves the patient's experience, builds trust, and allows them to use their digital wallet.
What's a Guarantor?
In medical terms, a "guarantor" refers to the person who is legally responsible for paying a patient's medical bills, usually a parent or legal guardian for a minor, or the patient themselves if they are an adult with the capacity to pay; essentially, the individual who assumes financial responsibility for the medical expenses incurred by the patient.
PatientPay uses the age of the bill and science-based factors to generate custom, branded electronic and print communication to the patient, as well as a branded portal using the provider's name, logo, address and contact information. As far as the patient knows, all communication is originating from the provider, which serves as a additional trust factor. Any updates to the statement, including balance updates and the bill's disposition, are kept in sync to ensure the patient is given the most current information.
The guarantor/patient receives email, SMS text, and print communication with a secure link to access their bill. They can easily authenticate using their date of birth, so onboarding is a snap and patient isn't having to create usernames/passwords. They view a simplified version of their bill before paying using a number of convenient options including credit/debit, HSA, bank draft, or payment plan. Once a patient has saved their credit card or bank information to their digital wallet, they can reuse that payment method on any future bills. All the while, patients are given timely communication of reminders, late notices, advanced notice of upcoming payment plan installments, subscriptions or Auto-Pay, as well as receipts. PatientPay completes the loop by sending any payments/refunds back to the provider's system of record for reconciliation with Accounting.
In the end, the patient leaves with a confident understanding of their bill, fewer phone calls to the provider, and convenient payment via their mobile phone. The provider is paid more, faster, and with less of a burden on their staff.
